WHEN OLEKSANDR USYK defeated then-current heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua last year, it rather shook up the boxing scene. And now, title outsider MG hopes to do similar in the small electric car class, with its new MG 4 hatchback.

A rival to the likes of the Cupra Born and Volkswagen ID 3, the MG 4 pairs a single 167bhp electric motor with a 51kWh battery, to provide an official range of 218 miles in entry-level form.

A more powerful, 201bhp motor with a 64kWh battery will also be offered, and this will give an official range of up to 281 miles – farther than the Nissan Leaf and most versions of the Born can take you.

A performance version of the MG 4 will also be available in the future. It’ll share the 64kWh battery of the regular version, but dual electric motors will give the car four-wheel drive and provide 443bhp in total.

As a result, the hottest MG 4 is claimed to sprint from 0-62mph in just 3.8sec, making it quicker than the most powerful versions of the Born and ID 3.

The 51kWh model has a maximum charging rate of 100kW, while the 64kWh versions can charge at a higher rate of 125kW. At this rate, a 10-80% charge should take around half an hour if you
