OFTEN IN LIFE we have to choose between being virtuous or having fun. Buyers lucky enough to be considering the new Maserati GranTurismo have a slightly different set of options – two of them simply fun, the third virtuous AND fun.

The virtuous and fun GranTurismo is called the Folgore – Italian for lightning – and it’s a four-seat, two-door electric performance car driven by three motors. Two motors drive the rear wheels, while the third drives the fronts, giving it four-wheel drive, 750bhp and 997lb ft of torque. The Folgore lives up to its name, with 0-62mph in a lightning-quick 2.7sec.

The motors get power from a battery with an 83kWh usable capacity, which is likely to give the car an official range of up to 300 miles (real-world range will be less).

That’s roughly in line with the 751bhp Porsche Taycan Turbo S, with its 291-mile official range and 0-62mph in 2.8sec. Like the Taycan, the Folgore has 270kW rapid charging capability, so you should be able to charge it from 10-80% in around 20 minutes if you can find a powerful enough charger.

So what about the merely fun versions of the GranTurismo? Well, the entry-level car is called the Modena and has a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 483bhp and 443lb ft of torque, for 0-62mph in 3.9sec. Between the Modena and Folgore sits a second V6 petrol, the Trofeo (trophy), with 542bhp, 479l
