TARGET PRICE

The What Car? Target Price is the maximum you should pay for a new car and is set by our mystery shoppers. It’s updated each month and most of our approved dealers will match it. However, in a lot of cases they can save you even more: just visit whatcar.com/new-car-deals or call 03302 216207 between 9am and 5pm (standard network fees apply). All Target Prices are correct at the time of going to press.

TARGET PCP

The Target PCP is a fair monthly fee if you’re taking out a personal contract purchase (PCP) finance deal, also set by our mystery shoppers. Most are over 48 months with a 15% deposit and an 8000-mile annual limit. Those marked with an asterisk are over 36 months and those with an apostrophe are over 42 months. Ford deals are over 9000 miles, while those for Honda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Skoda and Volkswagen are over 10,000 miles.

TRUE MPG

What Car?’s True MPG figures show the fuel economy you can really expect. The test is done in a laboratory to ensure repeatability within 1% but is based on a real-world route that takes in urban, rural and motorway driving. It’s tightly controlled: climate control is set to 21deg C and cars due to be tested are stored overnight at 23deg C so that each starts with the same engine temperature.

True MPG figures reflect what’s achievable if you drive gently and stick to speed limits but don’t resort to unrealistically slow acceleration or special ‘hypermiling’ techniques.

REAL RANGE

What Car?’s Real Range test shows how far an electric car can really drive on a single charge. The car is driven at our test centre until its battery is flat, then we fully charge it (measuring the energy required to do so) and soak it overnight to 18deg C.Then, with the lights and air conditioning on, two people inside and the outside air between 10 and 15deg C, we drive our 19.4-mile route, which simulates a mix of urban, rural and motorway driving. It’s driven twice for cars that require more than 60kWh to charge and three times for those that require more than 100kWh.

VERDICT

Our road test reviews are the standard by which the car industry judges new cars. Our pick from each range is highlighted in red.
