SHARE THE LOAD Like some other electric cars, the e-3008 has a ‘vehicle to load’ (V2L) function, so you can power other electrical devices via the car’s charging port.

WE ALL KNOW E numbers are bad for you – unless, it seems, you want an electric Peugeot.

The latest model to follow Peugeot’s ‘e-number’ naming format is this new e-3008 family SUV, which follows on from the e-208 and e-308 hatchbacks and the e-2008 small SUV and has a headline-grabbing official range of up to 435 miles.Although real-world range usually falls short of official figures, this still represents a big step forward, not just for battery-powered Peugeots but for mainstream electric SUVs in general.

The caveat is that we’ll have to wait a little longer for the Long Range version that yields that sort of range. The first model to arrive will be an entry-level e-3008 with a 73kWh (usable capacity) battery and a 211bhp electric motor that drives the front wheels and can officially cover up to 326 miles between top-ups.

The e-3008 Long Range, which gets a 228bhp motor and a larger battery with a 98kWh usable capacity, will come later, alongside a four-wheel-drive Dual Motor version, with the same battery and range as the entry-level model but much more power: 322bhp.

The entry-level e-3008 will be joined at launch by a mild hybrid petrol 3008. Regular hybrid and plug-in hybrid 3008s will be available later.

The e-3008 is an important car for Peugeot’s parent company, Stellantis, because it’s the first to use the group’s new-generation electric car underpinnings, which are said to improve performance and handling, as well as efficiency and technology options.

We’ll let you know how true that is when we’ve driven one, but we can tell you that the new model has a similar silhouette to the existing 3008 – until you reach the rear, where the roof and tailgate swoop down for a coupé SUV look.

The headlights are narrower, there are ‘three-claw’ vertical running lights on each side of the front grille, and the grille itself curves inwards at each end. Meanwhile, the 19in or 20in wheels (depending on trim) are a new design, with Peugeot’s updated badge in the centre.

There’s plenty to see inside, too, starting with the curved 21.0in Panoramic i-Cockpit digital screen that runs across the top of the dashboard, serv
