Estate-only Passat is longer and wider than before

IF THE RECENT news that Volvo will no longer sell estate cars caused you to panic, don’t worry. Not every manufacturer has lost faith in the format; indeed, Volkswagen has done exactly the opposite, with its new Passat being available exclusively as an estate.

What’s more, the new car offers more engine choice than before. The range opens with a 148bhp 1.5-litre mild hybrid petrol, and this forms the basis of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) set-up in conjunction with an electric motor and a 19.7kWh battery. The PHEV will be available in 201bhp and 268bhp forms, both offering an official electric range of 62 miles. Alternatively, a 2.0-litre petrol engine is available in 201 and 261bhp forms.

All versions come with either a five or six-speed automatic gearbox, and the gear selector has been moved to the side of the steering wheel, freeing up storage space between the front seats.

While the Passat’s exterior styling isn’t a huge departure from that of the previous model, the new car is longer and wider, and this should mean more leg room for rear passengers. It also means a boot that, at 690 litres, dwarfs that of the rival Peugeot 508 SW.

More obviously different from before is the Passat’s interior, which now has a much more futuristic look. Its centrepiece is an infotainment touchscreen of up to 15.0in, depending on trim level and options fitted.

We expect prices to start around £38,000 for the mild hybrid 1.5 petrol. That means it will slightly undercut the 508 SW but be a little pricier than an Audi A4 Avant.

Both V6 and V8 petrol engines will be available, alongside up to four plug-in hybrid options, with the range-topping Turbo E-Hybrid offering more than 650bhp and a 53-mile electric range.

Mazda MX-5

For 2024, Mazda has given the world’s biggest-selling two-seat convertible new front and rear lights, a larger infotainment screen and extra safety kit, including lane-keeping assistance and a speed limit warning system. However, probably the most exciting news for prospective buyers is the presence of
