Licence all correct

With reference to Dennis O’Leary’s letter (Dec 2023, p16) titled, Renewing your C1 licence at 70, the information given is incorrect in parts.

The D4 medical report does not require a registered optician to carry out the vision assessment. As advised in the D4 information and useful notes booklet, “The medical examination includes a vision assessment, which must be filled in by a doctor, optician or optometrist. Some doctors will be able to fill in both the vision and medical assessment”.

The cost of £110 that Dennis paid is extortionate. In July, I paid £55, and this is an increase up from £50 three years ago. This is for the complete D4 medical assessment, as long as there are no medical complications that need to be supported by family GP reports or by consultant reports. I used Vital Medicals, which covers the West Midlands.

The £17 cost that Dennis paid is only if a new photo ID is required. As stated in the D2 form, a photo will need to be included if your licence is due to expire within 56 days or has expired, or if this is your first photocard licence or if you wish to update your current photo.

Otherwise, the licence application is free.

As I mentioned, the C1 application becomes a minefield when the applicant has a medical condition or conditions that require a GP report or consultant report. Details of medical conditions that the DVLA need to be informed about can be found on its website. This information covers all licence categories.

In the December 2023 issue, Dennis states you need to see a GP for a medical, but please let readers know, as I think has been listed in previous issues, they can go online and look for D4 medical, then choose your nearest town. This service only charges £50 and completes the forms, the same as a GP. A much better service.

Wonderful Webasto

The recent review of the Hillside Hopton (Dec 2023, p91) mentioned a feature that made me punch the air in celebration, the Webasto diesel-powered heating and hot water system! OK, maybe not punch the air, but a wry smile did flicker across my face.
