Nick Peers explains how to upload your own contributions to the CWGC’s site For Evermore

For Evermore: Stories of the Fallen is a new online platform launched in October 2023 by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (cwgc.org) that aims to provide visitors with more rounded histories of the people who fell during the two world wars. It’s a voluntary project that can include stories about anyone recorded as a casualty on the CWGC’s website, which covers the almost 1.7 million people who are buried or commemorated on memorials across 23,000 sites administered by the commission.

The CWGC is keen to point out that all of the material and stories submitted to it aren’t independently vetted, so should therefore be considered unofficial, although all entries are reviewed by moderators before being published.

You can find out more about For Evermore on page 19. Fortunately contributing to the website is relatively straightforward, as this month’s ‘Tech Tips’ reveals – in fact, if you follow our advice and get all of your material prepared beforehand, you can upload your fallen ancestor’s story in the space of just a few minutes following the step-by-step guide. 2 Locate Your Ancestor Visit cwgc.org, type the name of the relation you wish to feature into the ‘Search our records…’ box and click ‘Search’. Use the information provided in the results to locate their entry, then click the ‘More Details’ button to visit their personal web page. Select the web link and copy it to your clipboard.

3 Set Up Your Story Now click the ‘For Evermore’ link at the top of the page or go to cwgc.org/stories and click the ‘Submit a story’ link. Scroll down to the story introduction section and paste the copied link into the ‘Casualty detail URL from CWGC’ field. After a short pause, their name should appear to its left.
