Celebrating women

International Women’s Day is on 8 March, and here we celebrate the inspirational ladies who are paving the way for better rights for women

Thanks to her role in the Harry Potter film franchise, actor Emma has garnered a huge following and is determined to use her platform for the greater good. When she was just 24 the star, now 33, was appointed as a United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador. At the time she said, ‘Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting.’ Since then, she has been integral in campaigning for women’s rights, specifically dedicating her time to the #HeForShe movement, which is working towards gender equality.

Melanie Brown

Back in the 1990s she was a feminist icon as part of the Spice Girls but now, after experiencing domestic abuse, Mel B has made it her mission to speak out about abusive relationships. The singer, 48, is a patron of Women’s Aid, and in 2022 she was awarded an MBE for her services to charitable causes and vulnerable women.

Previously, Mel shared, ‘I try to live by the girl power motto. It’s about believing in yourself, no matter how bad a day you’re having, and lending your support to other women.

It’s empowering to have that camaraderie with other women.’

Phoebe Dynevor

Bridgerton star Phoebe was named an ActionAid ambassador in 2021 and is determined to use her celebrity to make a difference. The 28-year-old has been vocal about standing up against sexism, saying, ‘There’s still so much more progress to be made and so many things that are still taboo. Helping to bring awareness to the daily injustice and suffering of women and girls around the world, and to work for positive change is something I am proud to be a part of.’

Jennifer Lopez

When she’s not singing, acting and dancing, Jennifer devotes her time to helping others. Not only did the UN name her a global advocate for girls and women, in 2009, the star, 54, and her sister Lynda founded the Lopez Family Foundation. Its aim is to increase the availability of quality healthcare and health education for women and children, regardless of their ability to pay. Discussing the project, J-Lo said, ‘There is still a lot more work that needs to be done for gender equality and universal access to medical care… I am eager to lend my voice and ensure that all girls and women are safe, healthy, educated and empowered.’ >>
