After reading Dr Susan Michaelis’ story about her lobular breast cancer [October], I examined myself again and found a large hard lump – it was breast cancer. The tumour I had removed was invasive and fast-growing, and in another six months, it would have doubled and spread. I feel so lucky to have caught it early, thanks to w&h. You now have a lifelong customer.

COMMUNITY LIVING

I loved the feature on co-housing [April]. The hippy communes I remember from the 60s and 70s were about casting convention aside in favour of selfexpression, which generally meant that no one was willing to undertake basic chores. How much better it sounds nowadays!

PERFECT GIFT

After reading author Vanessa Chan’s interview [February], I’m buying her historical novel The Storm We Made for my husband’s 90th birthday, as it’s set in Malaysia, where he was stationed from 1958 to 1960, doing his National Service. We returned there in 2011 to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

THE POWER OF LOVE

I thoroughly agree with Lotte Jeffs’ piece, Love is Love? [April], about how she and her wife encourage their daughter to follow her own path. As a heterosexual parent, I was concerned that my way of life might dictate the choices my children made – Lotte and her wife are no different. We can only do our best in this complex world.
