As the weather gets colder and we hurtle towards Christmas, there’s nothing better than snuggling down at home or feeling fabulously festive in a cosy pub or restaurant. But it’s also important to spend time outside. Not only does getting out and about keep you moving, swapping central heating and fairy lights for fresh air and daylight can improve both your physical health and your emotional wellbeing – helping everything from sleep to your stress levels. Ready to grab your coat? Try these easy ways to reap the benefits.

Fill up your lungs

Start your day right with a breathing exercise outside. ‘Breath work can help you get through stress, anxiety, grief, panic attacks, phobias and depression, which can lead to a happier, healthier and more peaceful you,’ says Stuart Sandeman, founder of Breathpod. Step out into the garden as you’re waiting for the kettle to boil, or try it while you’re waiting for a bus or train. Breathe in slowly through your nose, feel the air fill up your chest and expand your stomach. Exhale it away. Repeat this several times and then get on with your day.

Get inspired

The great outdoors can spark your creative side, which is proven to be good for stress relief. ‘Being creative stimulates the brain to produce oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, after just 20 minutes,’ says Irene Ruby of makingsandmusings.com. Wrap up warm and paint the landscape, or walk along a woodland trail and then bring some nature indoors.
