As she celebrates her 42nd birthday, we take a look at how Kate went from shy student to the monarchy’s right-hand woman and the new Prince ss of Wales

Humble beginnings

Unlike previous royal spouses, Kate wasn’t born into aristocracy, and while at first this may have been a disadvantage – she was dubbed a ‘commoner’ in the early days – Kate’s so called ‘humble beginnings’ have turned out to be one of her greatest assets. From once working in retail, to baking her children’s birthday cakes and loving high-street numbers from brands like Zara, the Princess of Wales is – as much as any royal can be – seemingly just like us.

Waity Katie

Kate and Prince William briefly called time on their relationship in 2007. But, despite the pressure and unwanted outside opinions, they soon rekindled their romance and Kate remained loyal to her prince – even when it resulted in the press branding her ‘Waity Katie’. It was then that we, and clearly William, knew she’d be perfect for the role as a royal wife.

Becoming royal

In October 2010, after eight years together, William popped the all-important question, solidifying Kate’s royal future. From then onwards she was invited to join William on official engagements, where she revealed more of her personality to the nation. Fast forward to April the following year and Kate cemented her place in the Royal Family (and our hearts) when she wed the future King in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey, which was viewed by 162 million people. In an event where all eyes were on her, Kate made no mistakes and marked the beginning of a new era for the monarchy.

Mastering motherhood
