Which painkiller should you take?

Choosing the right medication can be a minefield. Here’s what to reach for when pain strikes…

While the pharmacy shelves might, at first glance, be bulging with choice, knowing what to pick may be simpler than you think. That’s because whether you are buying a painkiller (analgesic) in the supermarket, getting advice from your local pharmacist or seeing your GP for a prescription, there are only three main types available – paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) and opioids.

Spend wisely

The first thing to do when you’re looking at pain medications is read the ingredients on the pack – it could save you money. Many medications you can buy over the counter are sold under numerous brand names that mask the fact you are buying a simple painkiller, such as paracetamol. In 20 years of being a doctor, I’ve met plenty of patients who insist that certain brands work better than others, but I’m yet to be convinced of this. In fact, I always buy generic (unbranded) painkillers for myself.

Paracetamol, in my view, is seriously underestimated as a painkiller. It is easy to find, can help most ailments and isn’t known for causing side effects. If taken within the recommended dose it can usually be taken long term. Even if it doesn’t take the pain away completely, it’s great at working with other painkillers to enhance their effect – yet I see so many people write it off as not strong enough. If you can take paracetamol, this would always be my starting point.

Limit intake

Whilst there are several NSAIDs I can prescribe, only a couple, ibuprofen and naproxen, can be bought over the counter.
