Enjoy Easter chocolate without the guilt!

When my friends asked me how they could have a guilt-free chocolate habit, I raised an eyebrow, because we must eat any food we like without guilt. So this week, I thought I’d write about savouring chocolate but – of course – I’m going to use the M word. No, not the menopause. The other one. Moderation.

Eating chocolate at Easter is no different from eating chocolate in October. Just because it’s a religious celebration, and there is an abundance of cute yellow banners in all the supermarkets urging us to part with our cash, doesn’t mean the calories gained are laced with spiritual fairy dust – disappearing in a mystical puff of smoke. They don’t. If you want chocolate, eat some – but have it in place of something else.

Let’s take Sandra. Sandra loves chocolate, especially those foil-wrapped Lindt Lindor eggs. She wants to treat herself to one every day for the entire month of April, but she doesn’t want it to interfere with her healthy eating programme, which she’s been working hard at. The eggs (28g version) come in at 180 calories each – so not disastrous – but multiply that by 30 days and that racks up 5,400 extra calories (about 1.5 pounds of fat). Yes, readers, I’m going in hard with detail. But if Sandra gives up her daily packet of Hula Hoops and adds another 3,000-5,000 steps to her daily total, then she won’t put on any fat, her calorie deficit will be intact and she’ll be a happy (Easter) bunny.
