We service our cars and boilers to make sure they run smoothly, so why not our bodies?

In recent years, we’ve taken a different approach to our health. We’ve been increasingly encouraged to look after ourselves without necessarily making our GP the first port of call. Pharmacy reforms are allowing us to access more healthcare on the high street, and DIY tests mean that we can check for various conditions without needing a doctor’s appointment. With this in mind, here’s our selection of quick and easy at-home tests that you can do in your own time.

Anaemia

Iron deficiency anaemia commonly occurs due to a lack of iron in your diet, leading to a reduction in red blood cells. In the UK, it affects 8% of the female population. Symptoms include low energy, breathlessness and pale skin. Untreated, it can lead to heart problems and reduced immunity.

THE TEST Hold out your hand, palm up, and push your fingers back. Your palm will go pale, but if the deep lines also go white you may be anaemic. If you’re worried, ask your GP for a blood test or try the MyHealthChecked Iron Deficiency Rapid Test (£7.99, Boots).

Atrial fibrillation

The most common irregularity of the heart, atrial fibrillation can lead to strokes and heart problems, says Dr Nick Summerton.

THE TEST ‘Several mobile phone apps have been developed that allow anyone to check their heart rhythm,’ says Dr Summerton. Try FibriCheck (fibricheck. com). Plus, there’s often a built-in function on smart watches, such as Fitbit or Apple Watches. KardiaMobile (£99, alivecor. co.uk) is a clinically validated personal ECG (electrocardiogram) that lets you email your results to your doctor.

Bowel cancer

It’s the fourth most common cancer in the UK, but 90% of cases can be treated successfully if found early.

THE TEST Aged 60-74? The NHS will send you a kit every two years, although the age is lowering. The test has a stick attached to the lid so you can take a small sample. Then post it using the Freepost envelope. Don’t fit the criteria? Try the SELFCheck bowel health test (£14.99, selfchecktests.com).

Cervical cancer

Every year, more than 3,000 women in the UK are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Despite this, many of us skip NHS cervical screenings – in 2023, around 4.6 million women didn’t show up.
