KATE ‘I’m only at the beginning’
After admitting she’s had to withdraw from her pension fund to pay off some of the debt she found herself in after caring for her husband Derek Draper, who died in January, Kate Garraway has opened up about dealing with the early stages of grief.
The star, mum of Darcey, 18, and Billy, 14, has admitted that she still has a long way to go. ‘I’m only at the beginning of grief really... so there are many ups and downs to come,’ she said. And when it comes to learning to adjust to life without Derek, Kate, 57, said at the Prince’s Trust Awards, ‘At the moment it’s about focusing on the youngsters, Billy and Darcey, and focusing on doing things like this when I can, that I haven’t been able to do.’
It seems distraction is key for Kate at the moment, as the GoodMorning Britain presenter explained, ‘I’m sure there will be a moment where I have to stop and deal with it. But at the moment I’m just keeping busy.’ And the star, who cared for Derek for four years after he developed serious health issues due to COVID-19 and estimates her debt to be £500-£800k, went on to tell fans the importance of accepting support during tough times.
‘Help is there. You just have to ask for it, and sometimes you have to ask for it time and time again,’ she said. ‘Community is everything, whether it’s friends or colleagues, or your neighbours down your street. It keeps us going. It’s the structure that carries us through life.’
