Patisserie teams are doing battle in Bake Off: The Professionals, with Cherish Finden and Benoit Blin back as the mega-tough judges – sampling the contestants’ efforts and keeping an eye on the kitchen over the summer as the competition progresses. Here, Cherish reveals her thoughts on the ninth series of the popular baking challenge show…

How does it feel to be back for a ninth series?

It’s a captivating glimpse into the world of professional pastry. Viewers will be amazed by the skill and entertained by the drama!

What’s the standard like this year?

It’s exceptionally high – and all are really impressive in their Showpiece sculptures.

Do you get nervous watching them prepare their jaw-dropping Showpieces?

I always get a really strong urge to put my chef’s whites on and intervene!

What do the contestants particularly struggle with this time?

Choux pastry – issues with consistency which makes Showpieces collapse!

Is it fair to say you and Benoit are the most straight-talking judges on TV?

As a judge, it’s vital to combine honesty with kindness. We must critique yet avoid doing too much harm to their confidence.

You’ve judged all nine series together since the show’s launch in 2016. What are the secret ingredients of your successful partnership?

Mutual respect, trust and commitment to excellence. Working with Benoit is a joy.

What has been your favourite taste or creation over the show’s nine seasons?

One of my favourite creations was crafted by Emmanuel Bonneau and Sam Leatherby from London Hilton on Park Lane, who won Series 3 in 2018. It was a chocolate and sugar piece, which included intricate chef figures and a miniature kitchen. It was standout!

Do you ever tire of sampling sweet stuff?

I don’t really eat sweet treats at home, I prefer crisps, or comfort food like beans on toast.
