Are you often slumped exhausted on the sofa, instead of going for a walk or to the gym? If you feel tired and run-down, you’re also more likely to reach for unhealthy snacks, which fuels fatigue and causes the pounds to pile on. You can break the cycle and give yourself a boost with this charge-up diet, devised by holistic nutritionist Yuri Elkaim, author of The All-Day Energy Diet*.

WHAT TO EAT

These alkaline foods are easily digestible and nourishing. Certain foods, such as leafy greens and vegetables, contain enzymes that accelerate metabolic reactions in the body. You’ll feel lighter, brighter and more energised. Your body will also start to shed any excess weight and you could lose 5-7lb in a week.

Keep acid-forming foods and sweet fruit to a minimum: Red meat; poultry; dairy; eggs; cakes; crisps; cola; processed food; tea; coffee; chocolate; biscuits; bananas; figs; papayas; mangoes; kiwis; pineapples; grapes; melons; oranges; grapefruit.

Non-sweet fruit (unlimited): Apples; all berries; tomatoes; pears; cucumbers.

Fruit, veg, seeds, grains: Leafy greens; lemons; limes; almonds; pecans; walnuts; apricots; onions; garlic; ginger; quinoa; buckwheat; brown rice; coconuts; coconut water; avocados; asparagus; cauliflowers; sunflower, flax, pumpkin and sesame seeds; olives; alfalfa sprouts; herbs.

Coloured vegetables: Carrots; beetroot; sweet potatoes; sweet peppers; courgettes; squash.

All recipes make two to three servings.

BREAKFASTS

Have a power smoothie every morning. Choose from...

FIBRE STARTER

Use 200g berries or 1 chopped apple, 2tbsp each of hemp, chia and sunflower seeds, and 1tbsp ground flax seeds. Add 450ml almond milk and leave for 2-3 mins before eating.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK

Blend together 1 banana, a handful of spinach, 2tbsp hemp seeds, 2tbsp hemp or flaxseed oil, 1tbsp ground flax seeds, 1tbsp cacao powder (optional), and 3-4 drops stevia natural sweetener.

CREAMY, ZINGY, LIMEY

Blend the juice of a 2.5cm piece of grated ginger with 1 avocado, 1 apple, 225-450ml coconut water or almond milk, and the juice of 1 lime.
