Since it began in the US in 2000, Survivor has been adapted around the world, and a British version aired on ITV1 for two series from 2000 to 2002. Now it’s been rebooted on BBC1 with Joel Dommett hosting the show in which contestants compete to outwit, outplay and outlast their rivals.
‘Anyone who knows the Survivor format will already know they’re in for an absolute treat,’ says Joel, who also hosts ITV1’s In with a Shout. ‘But if you don’t, I’m confident you’re going to love it!’
Marooned on an island in the Dominican Republic, 18 people from across the UK are divided into two tribes, before going head to head in a range of physical and mental challenges to win rewards or immunity from elimination.
One by one, the contestants are voted out of their tribes until the two tribes eventually merge and the game becomes a head-to-head battle.
‘It gets really competitive,’ says Joel. ‘When the tribes merge, that’s very exciting because it puts an entirely different dynamic on things. It’s fascinating to watch.’
Ultimately, only one person will win the title of Sole Survivor and pocket £100,000 in prize money.
‘Taking part in the show is life-changing for everyone, myself included,’ says Joel. ‘When you’ve done something like Survivor, you never forget it!’
