‘It reminds me of happy times’

A black-and-white film from the 1940s might not be everyone’s idea of a fun movie at first glance, but there’s no doubt in my mind that It’s a Wonderful Life is the best Christmas film ever made.

It is truly iconic, so I’m not surprised it remains top of the list of favourites. Every December, I look forward to my annual watch of the 1946 classic. It reminds me of happy times spent watching with my family, curled up on the sofa with a hot chocolate, and it’s perfect for getting in the festive mood, as well as being a window into Christmastime of the past.

Sure, there are plenty of modern Christmas films you could watch but, when it comes to storytelling, It’s a Wonderful Life is unmatched. Some might think of it as old-fashioned and not relatable to a modern audience, but I couldn’t disagree more. The film tackles issues such as family and money worries and mental health, and reminds us that we touch the lives of our loved ones in ways we probably don’t realise. I’d challenge anyone not to cry when protagonist George Bailey realises life is worth living after all.

And if you’re thinking this all sounds a bit heavy for Christmas, don’t worry, the festive scenes make up for the heartbreaking moments. If the true spirit of Christmas is about appreciating what we’ve got, it doesn’t get much more festive than this.
