The star on her ‘wobbly’ return to GMB and what’s to come next

Less than a week after the funeral of her late husband Derek Draper, a brave Kate Garraway returned to Good Morning Britain.

The star was off air in December when Derek, who had been battling health complications for nearly four years due to coronavirus, suffered a heart attack. He sadly died a month later. Speaking on her return to GMB, an emotional Kate told viewers it was ‘lovely’ to be back, but she did admit to feeling a bit ‘wobbly’. She added, ‘The make-up girls had me in tears this morning just by saying hello.’

Speaking to her co-host and good friend Ben Shephard, she reflected on Derek’s funeral, saying, ‘I definitely wanted to make it about Derek, not about me.’ But always finding a way to smile, she jokingly added, ‘That changes this morning by the way, it’s back to me.’ But all jokes aside, the star confessed that things are still looking uncertain for her as she and her children, Darcey, 17, and 14-year-old Billy navigate life without Derek, admitting, ‘I don’t know how it’s going to be. Grief isn’t containable in a day or year.’

Kate acknowledged that people have questioned her decision to return to work so soon, saying, ‘Well, everybody does have to, don’t they? Life has to start. We have to pick ourselves up and go on. That’s what Derek did and would want us to do.’

LOOKING AHEAD

While she clearly loves her job (Kate said following the death of Derek, ‘I look forward to waking up with you very soon again on Good Morning Britain to celebrate life in all its wonder and challenge again’), the star has finances to think about as well as her heartache. Kate is thought to have been ‘wiped out financially’ and even considering selling her £4 million north London home after redesigning the property to cater for Derek’s needs.
