As I write this, we’ve just put the finishing touches to the third A Vintage View magazine, which is on sale now. As if it wasn’t fascinating enough, this one has a gorgeous extra 25-page vintage wedding section in it, so it’s even more unmissable. This issue covers the 1930s, a decade which ended with the dark clouds of the Second World War firmly gathered over Britain. Both my parents-in law escaped from Europe during the war. My mother in- law was a child of nine when her parents put her on a Kindertransport train. She didn’t see them again for three years. My late father-in-law lost his parents and both his sisters. The trauma they experienced is unimaginable to our generation. And without the benefit of the sort of therapeutic support we take for granted to help them recover from their experiences. Yet they went on to build happy, successful lives and establish a family that continues to flourish. The affects of childhood torment of a different sort, not just on the sufferer but those they love, are movingly explored in the feature on page 14. The power of love to help heal the deepest of wounds should never be underestimated.
