And so we enter the 1930s, truly the start of the modern era. Despite hardships and scarce resources at the outset, a vision for a brighter, more democratic, more automated future was emerging. Women flexed their muscles a little more outside the home, even if the traditional roles in the spheres of parenting and work kept a gender divide many would not dream of altering. Film, radio and books exposed women to vivid images and daring ideas from the wider world, and for a moment, the sun shone brightly.
