By the time you read this, I’ll be 44. It’s the first birthday I’ve given more than a fleeting negative thought to; the first birthday that’s made me think: ‘I’m rather old.’ But before I became too gloom-ridden, I had a stern word with myself. Ageing is a privilege – and that’s reason enough to pop the champagne cork. I’m healthy, happy, successful and I reckon I look pretty good. I’m also fit. Not ‘fit for my age’; fit by anyone’s standards. I don’t mean to sound arrogant, it’s a simple fact – and it’s one I’m owning. And so our annual Fit At Any Age issue is one of my favourites.

Whether you’re in your twenties or your eighties, you’ll find motivation and inspiration in these pages. Check out Erika Rischko (page 82) who, at 82, can hold a plank with 60kg on her back. And turn to p108 to find out the health habits that will future-proof your body during every decade.

In other news, I recently won Editorial Leader of the Year at the British Media Awards. It’s a remarkable achievement and all thanks to my brilliant team; you can’t be a great leader without people to lead – and my lot make my job easy. When I got back to my hotel room after the ceremony, buzzing from a fabulous evening, I dived straight into social media to read the hundreds of messages I’d received, congratulating me on my win.
