ROUTE TO WELLTH

The broadcaster and multi-hyphenate national treasure on ditching caffeine, gym dates with her husband and her top technique for levelling up the way you feel and function

Swap

I used to love coffee but was getting frustrated with my fluctuating energy levels, so I figured I’d try ditching caffeine. I hate to say it, but it’s worked. It wasn’t easy – Ireduced my coffees to green teas then cut caffeine completely. Now, I have a mug of hot water with a turmeric and ginger shot on the side, and that picks me up.

Fuel

As healthy-eating rules go, mine are simple: I try to ensure that my plate is as colourful as possible and that I savour every bite. When I’m on the go, I try to translate my first rule into whatever I can grab at Pret. I opt for salads or grain bowls over the baguettes, which send me into a slump. There’s a place for beige food (like the morning after the night before), but not when I need to be on my A game.

Move

When time allows, I like to go for a 5K run and enjoy the sights in the rural area where I live. But that’s not realistic most days, so I adapt. On busy days, I always take my trainers with me, so if I don’t make it out for a run, I can get my heart rate up by walking between meetings. With movement, something is always better than nothing.

Lift

I love the kind of exercise sessions that really test me – physically and mentally. Weightlifting is the perfect example. The sensation of lifting heavier is such a simple way of illustrating to myself that, with enough effort and consistency, I can improve and achieve more. I used to focus on cardio, but weight training is satisfying in a different way – and the balance of both works for me.
