Euro 2020 semi-finals, Wembley

When Harry Kane reflects on his career thus far, he does so with a tinge of regret. As England’s all-time record goalscorer prepares to captain his countr y at the Euro 2024 finals, he looks back on the biggest games he’s played in…

I’ve been lucky enough to play in the Champions League final and a major final for England at the Euros, but they didn’t end as I would have wanted.

When you get that close to something special, it is hard to come away and not get over the line and that may be why I look at other matches in my career as being the most memorable. It’s hard to pin it down to one match and I’d probably pick out three.

The first would be my England debut, at home to Lithuania, as I scored so soon after coming on. You dream about playing for England at Wembley when you are growing up and when it happens, it doesn’t feel real. I remember going on for Wayne Rooney and the goal arrived almost straightaway. It was more than I could ever have dreamt about and even now when I think about it, you get that feeling inside. It will always be a moment that is really special for me.

The second match I would pick out would be the day I broke the Tottenham goalscoring record. Jimmy Greaves was an incredible player and when you have been at a club for as long as I was at Tottenham, you understand what a player like that means to the fans and the history books, so to break his alltime scoring record was amazing. It was against Manchester City, in February 2023, and it was a special feeling.

We had been speaking about it for a long time before it happened and it was almost like a countdown every time I scored a goal and got closer, so it was nice to finally get it done. I met Jimmy before he died and also his family, who were fantastic with me, so it was a massive honour to break a record set by someone as legendary as that.
