Europe’s 12th club…Red Bull Salzburg in the 2023-24 Champions League

Red Bull Salzburg will be Europe’s 12th and final team at next year’s expanded Club World Cup. The Austrian outfit will join Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, Benfica, Internazionale, Juventus and Atletico Madrid in the United States for the first edition of the finals in its new format.

UEFA’s 12 slots went to the last four winners of the Champions League, with the other places based on clubs’ records in the competition over the past four campaigns. With each country – with the exception of outright Champions League winners – limited to just two representatives, Red Bull Salzburg took the final spot.

Ironically, Salzburg’s qualification came after they missed out on their domestic league title for the first time since 2013, as Sturm Graz beat them to the Austrian Bundesliga crown.
