Something in Yorkshire that makes you smile?

Taking a moment out of the busy working day to really enjoy the splendour of everything around us. There’s always so much to do at Newby that it’s easy to get caught up in everyday tasks but I try to make time to enjoy the gardens and sculptures.

A place in Yorkshire that you love to eat?

My wife Fleur is a fabulous cook, so at home! With great local produce on the doorstep Yorkshire does hospitality so well and I’ve had some delicious dining experiences at both Tommy Banks’ Roots in York and at the magnificent Grantley Hall. But my wife’s cooking is right up there.

A place in Yorkshire that you like to go with friends?

Headingley cricket ground. I took two friends to the Ashes in July. It’s always more special when it is staged in Yorkshire – the atmosphere and the occasion make it a great day out, (almost) whatever the result!

A childhood memory of Yorkshire?

My interest in art was inspired by my mother. I remember her organising our first trail in 2001 from our kitchen. There were photographs of artists’ work all over the table. For the past eight years, I have had the pleasure of curating the sculpture trail at Newby. This year’s trail, featuring 42 contemporary artworks in our woodlands and down the riverbank, has just opened.

Your cultural go-to?

The Yorvik Viking Centre has long fascinated me. The York Archaeological Trust has cleverly used the well-preserved remains to recreate the sights, smells and sounds of the Viking city.
