PERSONAL APPEARANCE

Simon Reeve: To the Ends of the Earth

Bestselling author, broadcaster and all-round dangerman Simon Reeve loves an adventure and is used to travelling to far-flung places, so Yorkshire should be a doddle for him. He’s doing the rounds, while he’s here: as well as Hull he’ll be at York Barbican (4), St George’s Hall, Bradford (17), Sheffield City Hall (18) and Harrogate Royal Hall (24).

November 8, Hull City Hall, hulltheatres.co.uk

MUSICAL

Fairytale of New York

The blurb says this is ‘the ultimate feel good Irish-inspired Christmas show’ (pictured above) — not that there are many of those to choose from. It’s pretty much an excuse for a Christmas kneesup with songs including Driving Home for Christmas, White Christmas and, well, Fairytale of New York (natch). Also at York Opera House (14) and Hull City Hall (December 2).

November 2, Cast Theatre, Doncaster, castindoncaster.com

THEATRE

And Then There Were None

Agatha Christie’s bestselling chiller about 10 strangers who are invited to a creepy mansion on an island off the coast of Devon and then picked off, one by one, by a mad killer. It’s cracking good stuff, with a ‘don’t-tell-me-but-wherehave-I-seen-them-before?’ cast. Also at Grand Opera House, York (21-25).

November 7-11, Lyceum, Sheffield, sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

THEATRE

Beowulf

Proper Job Theatre Company presents this spectacular, sitespecific event which has been created for Kirklees Year of Music 2023. It’s billed as a sort of ‘Game of Thrones comes to Huddersfield’ – but don’t let that put you off. The blurb also makes clear it’s ‘a Yorkshire adaptation of this epic tale of warriors, monsters and dragons’ that’s suitable for all the family.

November 8-11, St Peter’s Church, Huddersfield thelbt.org

THEATRE

The Merchant of Venice 1936

A striking new and acclaimed production from the RSC, which transports Shakespeare’s most problematic play about ambition and power to 1930s Britain, and stars Tracy-Ann Oberman (from EastEnders and Doctor Who) as Shylock. The Stage thought Oberman was ‘magnetic’, while The Telegraph said the production ‘makes theatre history’. Go see.

November 14-18, York Theatre Royal, yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

MUSICAL

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Another outing for the feelgood hit musical (from The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie Sells) about a Sheffield teenager who dreams of being a drag queen. The show now stars the brilliant Ivano Turco as Jamie and Hayley Tamaddon as Miss Hedge, w it hShobna Gulati returning as Ray. It’ll be coming to Sheffield, Hull and Bradford in 2024.

November 14-19, Leeds Grand Theatre,
