CYLCLE THE CINDER TRACK

Scarborough to Whitby

New Year’s resolutions still (largely) intact? Keep it that way with a scenic ride (or even walk) from Scarborough to Whitby. Avoid traffic by travelling on the 22-mile Cinder Track, the path of the former railway line linking the two resorts, and now part of the National Cycle Net work.

DARK SKIES FESTIVAL

North York Moors National Park

This year’s Dark Skies Festival takes place February 9-25, with events across the North York Moors National Park, including many on the coast. It’s organised with North Yorkshire’s other great national park, the Yorkshire Dales, and the event celebrates the jewels of the night sky.

SKIP ON THE SEA SHORE

Scarborough

February brings something truly unique to Scarborough – perfect for your Instagram account. On Shrove Tuesday (February 13), locals turn out in their thousands to skip on the seafront. Why? Theories abound, but no one really knows…

WILDLIFE WATCHING

Bempton, Scarborough, Whitby

Take a whale-watching tour from Whitby (not exclusively whales, of course – you can also spot porpoises, dolphins and seabirds), or head down the coast to RSPB Bempton for one of the UK’s great birdwatching spectacles – puffins, gannets, guillemots and razorbills. Scarborough’s SEA LIFE Centre also brings you up close with some fascinating denizens of the deep.

WINTER WALK

Filey

Late winter into early spring is a great time to really blow away the cobwebs. Take a bracing walk along the fivemile stretch of golden beach at Filey – but don’t forget to factor in the return walk (and keep an eye on the tides).

BOB SMITH SPRING CUP

Scarborough

Yorkshire’s very own ‘miniature TT by the seaside’ kick-starts in the spring. England’s only natural road racetrack, the challenging course at Oliver’s Mount, is famous for its thrills, and a few spills. Exact dates to be confirmed, but look out for the first exciting event, the Bob Smith Spring Cup, in April.

FISH AND SHIPS FESTIVAL

Whitby

In love with Whitby and its remarkable martime heritage? Head to the annual Fish and Ships Festival (May 18 and 19) for a weekend of food, music and history. There will be live music, cookery demonstrations, heritage activities and all-round family fun – and don’t forget to enjoy some fish and chips while you’re there.
