THEATRE

Fat Chance

A celebratory and politically powerful one-woman play written and performed by twentysomething actress Rachel Stockdale, which explores the experience of weight gain from size 8 to size 18, struggle, class and the feeling of not belonging. ‘I’m not saying I’m beautiful,’ notes Rachel at one point. ‘I’m saying I’m fat AND beautiful.’ Also at Skipton Town Hall (March 23).

March 13, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, sjt.uk.com

THEATRE

The Crucible

Arthur Miller’s powerful, awardwinning drama, based on the Salem witch trials in the US, is a hard watch, but it’s a fascinating one, too. Aptly, it’s being staged at — where else? — The Crucible. A group of young girls are accused of witchcraft when they are discovered dancing and chanting in the forest.

March 2-30, The Crucible, Sheffield, sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

MUSICAL

Shrek the Musical

Ogre-tastic fun for all the family, based on Dreamworks’ Shrek movies, with songs including I’m a Believer, Big Bright Beautiful World and I Know It’s Today. Anthony Lawrence gets into the green face paint as the lovably disgusting title character, with former Strictly dancing professional Joanne Clifton as Princess Fiona. Our advice: just give into it.

March 5-10, Hull New Theatre, hulltheatres.co.uk

COMEDY

Tim Vine: Breeeep!

The titles of Tim Vine’s previous comedy shows range from the sublime (The Jokamotive) to the ridiculous (Tim Timinee Tim Timinee, Tim, Tim, To You). This one, simply called Breeeep!, falls into the latter category. The hilariously clever puns — which also somehow manage to be brilliantly stupid — fly at you thick and fast. Also at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax (March 14).

March 8, Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield, 01484 430528, thelbt.org

DANCE

São Paulo Dance Company

This stylish company from Brazil — which specialises in fusing classical ballet with Latin American dance — presents a programme of work from three different choreographers rooted in Latin American or Spanish culture: Goyo Montero, Nacho Duato and Cassi Abranches. Also appearing this month at Hull New Theatre (March 1-2).

March 8-9, The Alhambra, Bradford, bradford-theatres.co.uk

São Paulo Dance Company

DANCE

Northern Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet

The return of one of Northern Ballet’s most popular and critically acclaimed productions, adapted by Christopher Gable CBE and Massimo Moricone, and with music by a certain S Prokofiev. The Sunday Times called it ‘a box office cert for years to come’. It’s at the Sheffield Lyceum next month.

March 8-16, Leeds Grand Theatre, leedsheritagetheatres.com

MUSICAL

The Drifters Girl
