Welcome from the editor

The view on the cover of this magazine is my favourite in Yorkshire. The sweep of coastline towards Whitby from Lythe Bank. I’m not sure in the scheme of things whether I should reveal that – should I be an impartial editor who loves every village green, cobbled street, wild and windy moor, dry stone-walled meadow or Wolds vista as much as the next? And, as with your children, have no favourites?

Truth be told, every time I venture somewhere new on my Yorkshire Life travels, I find another favourite chunk of Yorkshire to love and return to – but it’s sentimentality that leads me back to Lythe Bank.

Like all good memories it harks back to a holiday. Heading for Whitby, that view meant we were nearly there. Soon socks would be off, toes paddling, rockpools investigated and a sugary lemon top dribbling down my hand.

I’ve stayed in an old railway carriage at the bottom of the steep Lythe Bank, but I’ve never ridden a bike down it – I suspect it’s exhilarating and not for the faint-hearted. The bank with its big view is part of a series of routes encouraging off-season tourism on the Yorkshire Coast and is certainly one to tempt. There are some less ambitious, kinder routes to try – see our Outdoor Section for more.

Putting together March’s magazine has certainly given a sense that spring is on its way. It seems crazy to be talking about Easter already. To help with your planning, especially if you’re of the baking persuasion, we’ve got some brilliant recipes for Easter gatherings – I kid you not, our bunny ears cake is one memorable showstopper.
