Guide to THE BEST events in April

DANCE

Edward Scissorhands

Pioneering dance maestro Matthew Bourne premiered this production 19 years ago and it’s good to have it back. Based on the Tim Burton movie fairytale, and with music by film composer Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, it tells the story of a sharp-fingered boy who goes to live with a suburban family. Also at Hull New Theatre

(23–27). April 9-13, The Alhambra, Bradford, bradford-theatres.co.uk

MUSICAL

Titanic: The Musical

We still can’t quite get our heads around the idea of a musical about the world’s most infamous sea-faring tragedy. But, hey, this show won five Tony awards and oodles of critical acclaim, and audiences seem to love it — so what do we know? Just don’t go thinking it’s anything to do with the James Cameron movie. April 5-6, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, sjt.uk.com

THEATRE

Bouncers

Bouncers put John Godber on the theatrical map when it first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 1977, and it has since become one of the UK’s most performed plays. Incredibly, Godber wrote it when he was just 19 years of age. This production is directed by writer and actress Jane Thornton (aka Mrs John Godber).

April 5-6, York Theatre Royal, yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

MUSICAL

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

A hit musical which started its life in Sheffield (next door at the Crucible) and ended up in the West End. Based on a real-life story and with a killer score from The Feeling’s Dan Gillespie Sells, it’s back in its hometown with Ivano Turco as Jamie and ex-Strictly pro dancer Kevin Clifton. It comes to Hull in June and Bradford in July.

April 9-20, Lyceum, Sheffield, sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

FESTIVAL

Huddersfield Literature Festival

The literary line-up at this year’s festival includes Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and the band LYR; poet Linton Kwesi Johnson; Lisa Nandy MP; actor and play wright Paterson Joseph; aut hor, broadcaster and journalist Jeffrey Boakye; actor and best-selling author Celia Imrie; broadcaster Stuart Maconie, and punk dub poet Atilla the Stockbroker. Something for everyone, then. April 11-28, various venues, huddlitfest.org.uk

CONCERT

Paul Weller

You know you’re getting on in years when a) policeman start looking younger, and b) you discover that Paul Weller — who was always the epitome of insouciant cool — is going to be 66 next month. Eek. And yet Weller still undeniably has ‘it’ as he’ ll prove this evening, rattling through a stylish set which should (hopefully) include songs from his stellar solo career plus The Jam and Style Council years. Also at York Barbican (17) and Scarborough Open Air Theatre in July.

April 11, Sheffield City Hall, sheffieldcityhall.co.uk
