Guide to THE BEST events in June

COMEDY

Every show on the BBC is, obviously, contractually obliged to feature the brilliantly funny Romesh Ranganathan in one way or another — so if he’s named as the new detective in Death in Paradise, we won’t be a bit surprised. Here, Romesh returns to his first love, which is stand-up comedy. He’ll be asking a series of searching questions (such as ‘is charity always a positive thing?’ and ‘is hustling the key to sucess?’) while providing ‘no real answers’. Also at First Direct Arena Leeds (June 7).

CONCERT

Oasis’s debut, Definitely Maybe, is 30 years old this year. In his usual humble way, the band’s former frontman, Liam ‘our kid’ Gallagher, has called it ‘the most important album of the ’90s bar none’ (forgetting, plainly, Steptacular by Steps). Gallagher will be swaggering through Definitely Maybe in its entirety, plus other Oasis tracks which haven’t been performed live for aeons. June 1, Sheffield Arena, utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk

ART

The annual opportunity (across two weekends) to meet creatives in their own studios and talk to them about their work and processes. There are far too many artists taking part to name here — and in a plethora of North Yorkshire locations, too — so our advice is to check out the website and draw up a list of the studios you want to visit. June 1, 2, 8 and 9, various venues, nyos.org.uk

MUSICAL

Will this jukebox musical lift you up where you belong? Well, that rather depends on whether you’re a fan of the schmaltzy Richard Gere drama about a US Navy pilot who falls out with his gruff drill sergeant and falls in with a glam factory girl. Also at Sheffield Lyceum (June 17–22). June 4–8, Grand Opera House, York atgtickets.com

BALLET

Northern Ballet brings back Beauty and the Beast, a show the company last performed eight years ago. Music is from Bizet and Debussy (among others), played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia; the costumes have been designed by choreographer and former Northern Ballet artistic director David Nixon; and the elaborate sets are by Duncan Hayler. A treat.

June 4–9, Leeds Grand Theatre, leedsheritagetheatres.com

MUSICAL

Put on your Frankie Say Relax T-shirt, roll up the sleeves of your jacket and enjoy an evening dedicated to the day-glo decade that taste forgot. This musical tribute show, direct from the West End, features songs by Wham!, The Weather Girls, Culture Club, Rick Astley, Madonna, Duran Duran, Soft Cell, The Human League, A-Ha and Tears for Fears, among others.

June 7, Hull City Hall, hulltheatres.co.uk

CONCERT

Halifax isn’t, perhaps, the first location you think of when you hear the words ‘musical megastars’ —
