Take a seat

My daughter-in-law asked if I could upcycle this telephone table. I painted, waxed and sanded it for a shabby chic effect. I reupholstered it in Orla Kiely. It’s now my granddaughters’ story chair. Cathy Smith, Bala

Megan, production editor, says: You’ve given this unloved telephone table a fairytale ending, Cathy!

A step change

I read your magazine every month and finally took the plunge to make the bold move with my stair banister. I wanted to go black but didn’t know if it would work. It looks fantastic and has made such a huge difference to the room. A bit of masking tape and a steady hand! Absolutely chuffed with how it turned out! Rebecca Grice, Lincolnshire

Beth, creative designer, says: What a steady hand you have, Rebecca! It’s so fiddly to paint spindles but it’s worth it. If you’re still looking for more stairway decor ideas, see page 88.

Warm welcome

I had to save up for my hallway makeover for some time, as it was so shabby! The ceiling was skimmed first, then the old carpet was binned. The wallpaper and painting took about a week to do. The wallpaper is Woodblock Trail in Claude from Little Greene. The floors were later sanded and that took another three days. I finally had carpet fitted on the stairs and landing. I cannot believe it is the same house. Every time I walk in the front door, I am greeted by this sunny vista which puts a smile on my face and makes me feel welcome. Zoe Cowie, Dorset

Tricia, creative design lead, says: What a makeover, Zoe! It was well worth the wait. I love that you’ve kept the lamp in place too, it looks so at home in your new hallway.

A total transformation!
