Better breathing

Breath work is the foundation of building better confidence because of the incredible impact it can have on the nervous system once the techniques have been fully mastered.

“When we’re nervous we tend to hold our breath, tense up and forget what to do — and often we aren’t even aware of it. However, when you tense your horse feels it. Tension is translated through the reins and your seat, as you will feel tight on his back,” explains Stephanie. “Horses are a prey animal. They have evolved to keep themselves safe, and you being tense on their back doesn’t make them feel safe.”

EXERCISE 1

Specifically focus on taking a really deep breath out to release any tension that you’re holding in your body. Imagine that you are pressing the reset button so that you can relax.

“Lots of people say or think ‘keep breathing’, but it’s better to focus specifically on breathing out as this is what relieves tension,” explains Stephanie.

EXERCISE 2

Focus on the speed of your breathing. Breathe in and out through your nose, counting slowly to four or more. By slowing down your breathing, your parasympathetic nervous system is activated. Controlling your breathing slows your heart rate and brings your anxiety down, allowing you to
