A veteran with vitality

Star photo

My 24-year-old cob, Jack, has the cheekiest personality and is the king of having selfies taken. He’s still very active despite his age and he loves hacking around the countryside —both under saddle and in-hand (off the lead rope). In fact, he’s got better recall than my dog. We recently celebrated our seven-year ‘gotcha day’ and I’ve enjoyed every minute with him.

Monarch lives like a king

My daughter is pictured with our boy, Monarch. He’s currently out on loan to a good friend who loves him as much as we do and he’s loving the quieter life.

Plum’s purple patch

This was my Christmas ride in 2022 with Plum. She’s an ex-racehorse and is aged 28 while I’m 70. We still get out about four times a week. Unfortunately, her eyes are scarred from ulcers following an injury. She also suffers from uveitis, and she needs to wear her UV fly mask at all times for protection, but that doesn’t stop us having fun. My daughter, Lorraine, and I bought Plum in 2005, a few months after her final race, when she was nine. Lorraine did all the exciting things with her, such as jumping and cross-country, while I just hacked. We also joined our local riding club and attended their camps for a few years. When Lorraine decided that she wanted to leave home and buy a house, I took on responsibility for Plum full time, never thinking that I would still have her a decade later. In those 10 years we did some dressage together, had low-level jumping lessons, went on fun rides and took trips to the beach. She was kept on a livery yard until I was able to rent the field next to my house, and she’s lived there for the last eight years.

Iona is a poser

I took this picture of Iona and me during the snow storms that hit the Cairngorms a few months ago. The Highlands definitely take the snow in their stride, and Iona also loves any opportunity to have her picture taken.

We love receiving your photos and each issue we print a selection. This month our favourite wins a new Likit Graze Maze, a a slow-feeding lick mat for horses, plus a 1.2kg tub of Likit Graze Paste, a tasty licking paste your horse will love. Visit likit.co.uk

Bear is the best

Omar El Nazeer (Bear) is my 10-year-old pure-bred Arab. He’s 16.1hh and was a successful FEI endurance horse with a friend. I’ve only owned him for a year and the plan is for him to do some more endurance, plus riding club activities and hopefully some ridden showing. He’s wonderful to ride, is a real character and he loves cuddles.

Project pony

This is me with my horse, Simon, a four-year-old, 16hh Thoroughbred who can be very cheeky. Simon is a project and I’ve been producing him for the past
