THERE IS NO point riding right if you aren’t shining bright when out and about with horses. In the world of equestrian safety, Equi Light high vis stands tall as a beacon of innovation, and the company has earned accolades for transforming the way riders and horses stay visible and secure. In fact, Equi Light’s Hi-Vis LED Rider Vest isn’t just a game-changer — this lightweight vest won the Safety Award in BETA’s New Products Awards last year, with the judges saying that it was “well-designed and easy-to-wear, with good additional features”. These include its hidden pockets. They also liked the way the versatile vest could be worn all year round.
In the beginning…
Equi Light was born during the 2021 Covid lockdown when mother/daughter duo Elizabeth and Rebecca Ellis decided to create practical and yet stylish hands-free light solutions for equestrians, dog owners and everyone who enjoys the great outdoors and needs to be seen. The move came about not only because of lockdown, but because Rebecca had previously been forced to give up her job in the equestrian industry due to ill health. (For many years she had groomed for an international showjumper, an eventer, and a National Hunt jockey, travelling all over the UK and Europe.)
“While I was working with horses I was often the only person on the yard wearing high vis when we took the horses out on the road,” says Rebecca, who is also a keen cyclist. “Sometimes I would modify my high vis and attach cycling lights to make myself more visible because the routes were often shadowy and under trees. Cyclists have to wear lights by law, giving them more visibility, and I began to think why isn’t this the case for horse riders? That’s when I decided that I wanted to tailor some high vis items that would be more fashionable than anything available in the cycling industry and would be something that people would actually want to wear.”
Since launching three years ago, Equi Light has gone from strength to strength, expanding its product portfolio and still basking in the success that that BETA award brought.
“Our Hi-Vis LED Rider Vest is definitely our bestseller and after winning the BETA award we sold out of all the stock we had in and after that we sold out again and again as soon as new stock arrived,” adds Rebecca, who runs the company only with Elizabeth’s help.
