This time of year can be busy for many of us, while others can feel a bit bored and flat from being cooped up indoors. Staying on top of our energy levels is important, so whether you want to get the most out of your Christmas or just feel well this winter, we’ve got some solutions.

RECOGNISE THE PRESSURES

“Christmas can be a time of real squeeze,” says Chartered Psychologist Suzy Reading. “Competing demands, conflicting needs, the pressure to make it wall-to-wall joy for everyone, and it being a time of heightened grief for the bereaved.” This can add unnecessary expectations. “It can be extremely taxing on our energy,” Suzy says. “We’re in the depths of hibernation season too, so go gently!”

MAKE CONSCIOUS FOOD CHOICES

It’s the season for indulgence but too much sugar, heavy carbs and alcohol can leave us feeling sluggish and lethargic. We can exercise control without feeling like we’re depriving ourselves by planning ahead. “Remove tempting foods from your home to reduce accessibility,” says neuroscientist Dr Sabina Brennan. Make small wins with different snack choices. “Keep healthier alternatives such as low-sugar fruits, vegetables and nuts handy for when cravings strike,” Sabina says. “Find healthier alternatives that provide similar sensory experiences. If you crave the crunch of crisps, opt for air-popped popcorn or vegetable sticks.”

GET OUTSIDE EVEN WHEN IT’S CLOUDY

Most of us suffer from a lack of daylight during winter, especially now the clocks have gone back. “This lack of exposure can leave people feeling lethargic during the day and affect their sleep,” explains sleep expert Dr Lindsay Browning. “To combat this, try to get outside every day to boost your energy levels and mood, and this will also help you sleep at night. Going for a walk on a cloudy day can still be helpful, as you will get benefits from the light even when the sun is behind a cloud.”
