Gardening in the winter has its own set of rules, but you don’t need to give up just because there’s a chill in the air. Don’t be tempted to be too tidy – leaving some growth will provide a winter habitat for the wildlife that camp out in your garden. Hedgehogs, foxes, and squirrels all need shelter from the cold weather just as much as us. It’s also the perfect time to incorporate shrubs, trees, and birdfeeders – all of which provide vital winter berries for birds.

Robert Irwin, son of the late wildlife educator Steve Irwin, recently released a baby Elseya Irwini turtle into its new enclosure at the Irwin Zoo in Australia. Robert’s father first discovered the species 30 years ago, and this baby turtle is the first of its kind to be hatched in any zoo in the world. Robert announced proudly, “Dad would be stoked, we did it.”
