Glamorous Guernsey

• This is my mum Diana, shown here as a teenager in 1955. The photo was taken at Moulin Huet Bay in Guernsey, her special place, as she lived in a little cottage on the clifftops above the bay as a girl. My dad Richard lived nearby and they went to the same school and married soon after this photo was taken.

As children they were evacuated off the island during the war years, my mum to Manchester and my dad to Kent where his father came from. They had many moves off the island but returned, finally, to a retirement flat which is just above Moulin Huet Bay again, so have moved full circle!

Mum is now, sadly, widowed but in good health. I think she looks very elegant and stylish in this photo and I’m sure her eyes will pop in surprise to see a photo of herself in our favourite magazine.

In hot water

• I am not in agreement with Kate Humble (issue 441). I love a teacup and saucer and use one all the time, and I always use a teapot.

Don’t ever let them go out of fashion.

Payday pleasure

• My first job as an office junior, aged 15, was sitting in an unlocked office of the weaving mill once a week. Money bags were delivered and we set to work filling the brown wage packets. Sometimes at the end we had sixpence left so had to check them all again. Then they were loaded onto an old wooden trolley and we pushed it all over the mill through open yards (no security in those days). How pleased the employees all were, but they always checked them before we left. Actual money in their pockets ready for the weekend. Happy times – I loved being an office junior.

A nutty idea

• Reading Jean Cook’s letter about collecting chestnuts reminds me of years ago when I collected some that were not quite ready to eat. My friend said to put them in a tin and bury them in the garden. I forgot about them until years after – only to dig up a rusty old tin up, thinking I had found buried treasure but only rotting chestnuts. What a let down!
