Our round-up of the touching, fascinating and unusual stories this fortnight
Mrs Macca’s beauty ‘secret’
Who knew that Paul McCartney’s mum, Mary, inspired a famous lyric in The Beatles’ hit song Eleanor Rigby?
Apparently, the line ‘wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door’ was a reference to her love of Nivea cold cream.
The secret snippet was revealed, along with other gems, in his new book McCartney: A Life in Lyrics.
OUR GREEN AND HEALTHY LAND
People living in Britain are more likely to eat their five-a-day than almost any other country in the world, according to a new report.
A third of adults have been found to consume at least five portions of fruit and veg daily, placing the UK in top spot of the global league table along with the Republic of Ireland. Close behind in the rankings were South Korea and Israel.
Language of Love
More than most, Kate Garraway and Derek Draper understood the power of words.
Never was it more evident than in the poignant messages that emerged following Derek’s recent death from Covid complications.
“Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life,” wrote Kate (56), so lovingly and without a shred of self pity, when announcing his passing.
Likewise, Derek (56) left a noble legacy that will surely comfort Kate and their children Darcey (17) and Billy (14) in the dark days ahead.
“You’re the best children anybody could ever have asked for. Look after Mum, be good for her,” he told them at the start of his Covid battle. Truly a legacy of love.
The show must go on
As it’s been reported that Coronation Street icon Bill Roache (left) has signed a new contract to stay on the cobbles for another year, we also hear that veteran actor Sir Michael Caine (90, pictured below) could be coming out of retirement.
