Our round-up of the funny, fascinating and unusual stories this fortnight

Bridget’s back!

It’s eight years since lovable singleton Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) married handsome lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and settled down to motherhood and family life.

But did the happy ending we sobbed over in the romantic comedy, Bridget Jones’s Baby, last? We’re about to find out… A fourth movie based on Helen Fielding’s 2013 novel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy begins filming in London in May. If true to the original plot, Bridget’s now a single mum and still searching for her perfect man.

As well as Renée, love rivals Colin Firth and Hugh Grant are expected to reappear.

No walk in the park

There’s one walk that dog owners hate taking their animals on – to the vet.

A recent survey by Petplan involving 2,000 owners revealed that 65 per cent found it a tough task because of their pets’ anxiety. Even the mention of the word ‘vet’ can leave some animals shaking with fear, with a quarter of them running off at the sound of it.

To help combat the distress, 32 per cent of doting owners say they come up with a code name for vets to help keep anxiety levels low.

BLOOMING LOVELY

It’s that time of year again when garden owners across England and Wales are opening their gates and inviting you in to admire their gorgeous blooms.

The National Garden Scheme lists 3,500 gardens on its website that you can visit this year – and if you’re quick you’ll catch the spring daffodils.

There’s a small entrance fee that is donated to Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end-of-life charity, and other healthcare charities. In the past 28 years Marie Curie has received £11 million from the scheme. n Plan your visit at ngs.org.uk

SAYING GOODBYE

We were so saddened to hear the news of the recent death of Dave Myers, one half of the Hairy Bikers. We had the privilege of interviewing and meeting both Si and Dave a few years ago on a Yours photoshoot. Dave was every bit as lovely, friendly and down to earth as he appeared on TV.

Dave had announced he was receiving treatment for an unspecified form of cancer in May 2022. He died aged 66 on the February 28, with his family and friends by his side.

Announcing his passing social media Si King left this heartfelt message. “Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.

“I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”
