Enjoy stunning scenery and beautiful locations

Taking holidays in this country gives you the chance to enjoy the many beautiful locations on our doorstep, and it saves you money on travel costs. Not only that, but holidaying at home can be more relaxing, if you avoid airport security, ferry delays, hire car chaos and language difficulties.

Post-Covid, domestic breaks continue to be popular. Last summer, nearly half (43 per cent) of holidaymakers planned to take either a staycation, camping trip or caravanning holiday in the UK, according to research by Go.Compare travel insurance.

So leave your passport at home and check out our top money-saving tips for a staycation.

Switch up your location

Rather than rushing to hotspots such as Cornwall or the Cotswolds, head off the beaten track for the best deals. In general, holidays in the north of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland tend to be cheaper, per person, per night, than the rest of England, according to research by consumer champions Which?. You can potentially save hundreds just by swapping a well-known destination for somewhere less visited only a few miles down the road.

Share accommodation

Avoid a single supplement by travelling with a friend or try booking a bigger place when heading off with couples or families, and then splitting the cost. It’s likely to be cheaper per person when booking for a larger group than opting for separate hotel rooms or individual holiday homes.

Shop around for somewhere to stay

Compare prices before finalising your booking if you’re looking at a hotel stay. Try websites such as Trivago, Kayak, Skyscanner and TravelSupermarket. Once you’ve identified a good option, consider contacting the hotel directly to see if you can nab better rates or extras such as late checkout.

Try alternative accommodation

Youth hostels aren’t only for the young, and many youth hostels now offer private or family rooms. Similarly, you don’t have to be a student to stay in university rooms. Some universities rent out empty student digs during the holidays. The facilities in student halls can be basic, but they can also be in great locations for city breaks.
