Picking up the pace on your daily walk could have surprising health benefits

We all know the benefits of walking more and strive to hit that magic 10,000 steps a day, but often the convenience of the car, coupled with unpredictable weather, can mean we frequently fall short. We spoke to Nina Barough CBE, a power-walking expert and founder and chief executive of breast cancer charity Walk the Walk (organisers of the iconic overnight fundraising event, The MoonWalk London), to discover how invigorating walking can be, and how to power up our stride to unlock a host of health benefits.

Aformer fashion stylist and fitness enthusiast, Nina says she came up with the idea of a fundraising marathon walk in a dream. Soon she had convinced a group of friends to join her at the New York Marathon wearing bras that had been designed by fashion royalty Paul Smith and Mary Quant.

“It was meant to be a one-off but we ended up raising £25,000,” she says.

Just a month later Nina discovered a lump on her breast, which turned out to be a stage-three tumour. She decided to do another marathon walk, and so Walk the Walk was born.

“I don’t know if I was leaning on Walk the Walk, or it was leaning on me, but it gave me something really positive to do that wasn’t medical. We all entered to do the London Marathon and each time there were a few more people tagging onto the team.
