Should you pay your kids to get good grades?

My daughter sits her GSCE exams this summer and her classmates are already discussing how much they’ll be paid depending on their grades. On a sliding scale, one girl will bank £200 per grade, while others have been promised expensive devices if they do well in their results. My daughter, on the other hand, won’t receive anything! And with good reason. These are her results, which she can use to build a future she would like for herself.

We have never paid for our children to achieve in their school or music exams because we firmly believe it sets them up for failure in later life. These are all opportunities to flex their independence, to feel they have some control, to feel a deep sense of pride when all their hard work pays off. And if we all only did things for financial reward where would be the pleasure in learning something new just for fun? Perhaps we need to show our young people they have influence over outcomes and how satisfying doing something well can be.

My daughter doesn’t believe being paid for grades would help her on results day. She actually feels more grown up for not being incentivised, even though she would of course love the cash!

By studying well they’re taking an active role in building their future. The reward is the opportunities which will be open to them if they apply themselves and see the results.
