THE WORLD WAS SET ON FIRE Battle of Midway June 4, 1942 was the turning point in the war in the Pacific. The United States and Japan met in a naval battle, fought by planes shipped from aircraft carriers. The ships lay over 1,000 kilometres apart and the duelling admirals never saw the enemy ships. In 1940 the Germans launched a lightning attack and in six weeks they had conquered France. Hitler controlled most of Europe and his next target was Britain. However, in the Battle of Britain the Royal Air Force pilots fought with a death-defying skill, breaking a more modern Luftwaffe. In 1941, on the Eastern Front the German army roared on heading for Stalingrad and Moscow. The invasion came as a surprise to Stalin but once the Red Army was mobilised, the war turned.
