The Red Army breaks Hitler “The troops must hold until the enemy is convinced of the futility of his attack” declared Hitler. He believed that the Dnieper river would stop the Soviet troops who were rapidly approaching Kiev from the east. The Soviets had other ideas. Soon, they had established the first bridgeheads on the western side of the river and Kiev was retaken shortly afterwards.
