I couldn’t see myself as a mum, that is until Isla came along...

Lauren Ormston, 28, from Hampshire

Sitting on the loo, I felt my nerves build.

I wasn’t sure what results

I wanted.

I can’t see myself as a mum, I thought.

Until I had met Ole, I wasn’t sure I would find someone I was comfortable enough with to have a family.

But meeting him four years ago had changed everything.

Having had regular periods most of my adult life, I knew to do a test when it didn’t arrive after two weeks.

But I had no typical symptoms or maternal instinct telling me I was pregnant – the test was just routine.

Until I picked the test up and spotted the two lines.

Nervous, I went downstairs to let Ole, 33, know the news.

Handing him the test, I waited to see his reaction.

‘Oh,’ he said. ‘I guess we’re going to be parents then.’

‘I guess we are,’ I replied.

And after the shock had worn off, we were over the moon – we were so excited for this next chapter of our lives.

Looking at our baby on the screen, I was overwhelmed – they were so beautiful.

And hearing their heartbeat made it feel all the more real.

On 26 February 2022, at 22 weeks, we found out our baby’s gender at a big party for all the family.

Ole was a gamekeeper and had inherited a shotgun when his grandad passed.

His grandad’s old friend made us a special shell with coloured powder inside.

The flash of pink confirmed we had a baby girl on the way! Everyone was ecstatic.

‘I can’t wait to have a granddaughter,’ Ole’s mum Tina, 53, grinned at us.

‘She’ll be spoiled rotten,’ agreed Dad.

Up until that point, we hadn’t bought anything for the nursery and began grabbing clothes whenever we popped to the shops.

Soon our little girl had a wardrobe ranging from newborn to three months.

‘It feels so real now,’ Ole smiled at me. ‘I can’t wait to meet her.’ ‘Neither can I,’ I grinned. On 3 March, Dad and I went to the local Tesco café for some food.

Tucking into some chicken strips, chips and beans, I felt a sharp p
