China is marking the 10th anniversary of the BRI (“Belt and Road initiative”) and has re-affirmed its commitment and new action plan for the landmark infrastructure and connectivity programme (p.22-25). Amid the upheaval in the Middle East and geopolitical rivalry in the Indo-Pacific, a deep dive into the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail shows the project goes beyond transportation and commercial benefits for the partners (P.28-31). It’s not just big developers like Country Garden that are in financial trouble. Debt for the villages is threatening to hinder China’s rural development (p.17-). On the bright side, Chinese films have enjoyed a record-breaking summer, thanks in no small part to social media (p.56-59).
