Fortunately public knowledge about the importance of SPF seems at an all-time high, and so it should be. We’ve never been so clued-up when it comes to the health risks of sun damage, and how to protect ourselves from skin cancers and melanoma. But what about areas that, despite our best efforts, we don’t always pay enough attention to? We asked sun damage expert Kimberley Medd, clinical lead at Face the Future – who sees the results of long-term neglected areas every day in her clinic – to bring you this comprehensive checklist of all the areas we might accidentally be missing…

Ears

Positioned to get a lot of sun exposure, but one of the most frequently missed body parts, ears are a common risk area for skin cancer. Always spread your face SPF right over the front, top and back of the ears. This also ensures the perimeter of your face isn’t forgotten.

Eyes

SPFs can irritate eyes, but avoiding the area increases the risk of pigmentation around and on the eyelids. Instead, use a targeted SPF eye cream and dab it carefully around the eyelids and beneath your lower lashes, rather than sweeping over the eye. Try Ultrasun SPF30 Eye Protection, £20.

Lips

The thinner skin on and just around the lips makes them one of the most susceptible spots for sun damage. Oh, and did we mention burned lips can trigger cold sores? No thanks. Opt for an SPF lip balm, such as Ultra Violette’s Sheen Screen Hydrating Lip Balm SPF50, £16.

Scalp

A high-risk sunburn spot, particularly in any areas without a lot of hair, or along your partings and hairlines. Sprays can work best here, see Coola’s Scalp & Hair Mist SPF30, £29, which doubles up as a hair colour protectant, too.
